How to style pillows like a pro.

Pillows are one of my favorite decorating elements! I find that the more you mix and match, the better. That sounds simple, right? But if you’re like me, you’ve had a time or two where you fall in love with a pillow thinking it’ll be perfect in your space, then you bring it home and for some reason, it just doesn’t work! Or maybe you’ve had this perfect vision in your head of what you want, and no matter what you get, it just doesn’t meet the idea in your head? Trust me, I’ve been there! Even the most experienced designers have to go through trial and error to get just the right combination. There’s a lot of elements to consider in order to strike the balance we want: Pillow size, color pallet, tones, mixing patterns, and textures to name a few. If you can’t quite get it right, you may not be considering all of those things when you go to buy.
This is where I come in, I’ve partnered up with one of my favorite pillow shops, Xasmin Interiors , to offer you some guidance on how to mix and match pillows to finally get the look you’re after. I designed each custom pillow set of 2 or 3 to be extremely versatile. They can either work together on a sofa or separately on a bed, hallway bench, breakfast nook or window seat.
This set is a great year round set up, though the pallet does lean towards the fall and winter months. Mixing patterns, sizes, and textures is the key here, same goes for the other designs. I love heavily textured pillow combinations so you might notice that even the solid pillows have a little texture to them.
This set feels like the perfect combination for people who want to achieve a beachy, calm feeling. Again, I mixed patterns, sizes and textures to create balance. The patterns themselves are even scaled differently to add more interest. A common mistake people make with pillows is to go too matchy matchy and they end up with something that feels cold and impersonal rather than comforting and homey.
Speaking of homey and comforting… If this set could talk it would say, “Light the fireplace and candles, make some apple cider, and let’s watch Hocus Pocus.” Ok, maybe I’m the only one hearing these pillows speak to me… Either way I think we can all agree this is a beautiful set for fall or for the person who loves warm earth tones like me!
For this final combo, I wanted to achieve a slightly more modern but still eclectic feel. It can go beachy, boho, or modern, it’s so versatile!
